Recall Sent Messages in Gmail

In order to undo sent emails in Gmail, you need to have the “Undo Send” option enabled in your Gmail account. When this option is enabled, Gmail will provide an explicit option to recall any recently sent emails from your Gmail account.

However, you need to take the necessary action quickly to recall sent emails, as Gmail only gives you 30 seconds to recall any sent emails.

Enable the “Undo Send” message option in Gmail

As mentioned above, the first step is to enable the Undo Send option and choose a period of time for this option to remain available in your Gmail account.

Log into your Gmail account on your computer > click the gear icon and select the Settings option in the drop-down menu.

On the “Settings” screen, make sure you are on the “General” tab and check the “Enable Undo Send” option under the “Send and Archive” section.

After that, click the down arrow next to Enable Undo Send and select the desired cancellation period.

After selecting a cancellation period, scroll down to the bottom of the screen and click the Save Changes button.

After this, you should be able to recall sent emails in your Gmail account.

How to recall a sent email in Gmail

Now that you have enabled the undo send option in your Gmail account, it’s time to test how this feature works.

1. Click the Compose button in the upper left corner of the screen to open a new email message window.

2. Compose a new test email and click the send button.

3. After clicking the send button, you will see a message that reads “Your message has been sent. Undo, review message.” at the top of the screen.

4. To recall the email you just sent from your Gmail account, all you need to do is click on the “Revoke” option.

This will immediately return the sent email to your Gmail account, allowing you to modify the message and send it back again (if desired).

If you don’t want to send a corrected message, just close the message and it will go to the drafts folder where you can delete the message or keep it for your own records.

As mentioned above, the Undo option is only available for a short time (up to 30 seconds). Therefore, you need to make a quick decision and click the undo link immediately.

Problems with the “Undo Send” option in Gmail

The problem with the “undo send” option in Gmail is that the option to undo a sent email appears very randomly at the top of the screen and immediately disappears after a very short time.

In short, the way this option is designed in Gmail is all wrong—small bars, small fonts, haphazard color choices, and an undo link that doesn’t stand out at all.

So make sure you get used to what the Undo Send option in Gmail looks like and how it works by sending some test emails and canceling them within the available 30-second window.
